Start with the river and its working history
The River Wey offers a different view of Guildford from the hillside shopping streets. A towpath walk can be a short break near the centre or the start of a longer outing towards neighbouring places. Choose a route that suits the weather, ground conditions and the distance you want to cover.
At Dapdune Wharf, the National Trust explains the history of the Wey Navigation and the people and boats that worked along it. Use its own visitor information for the wharf, boat trips and seasonal activities, which operate under different arrangements from simply walking beside the river.
Explore the castle and historic centre
Guildford Castle’s keep stands above public gardens a short walk from the High Street. The grounds and the tower are different parts of a visit: use the council’s current information for tower access and any admission arrangements. The garden setting also makes a natural pause between other town-centre stops.
The Guildhall and its projecting clock are another familiar High Street landmark. Guildford Museum at Castle Arch and the town’s other heritage venues offer further starting points for exploring local history. Consult the council’s heritage pages for current exhibitions and access to individual buildings.
Build a day around a performance or the hills
The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre beside the river and G Live on London Road bring different programmes to Guildford. There are also concerts and events at the Cathedral on Stag Hill. Our What’s On guide picks out dated local events with links to the people running them.
For a countryside outing, places such as Newlands Corner and the villages around Albury and Shere put the Surrey Hills within reach of town. Allow for the journey and choose a walk that matches your group, rather than treating a countryside attraction as another central shopping-street stop.
